In Code 3, you pin on the badge and the vest to patrol the streets of a fictional 1980s city overrun by organized crime and overflowing dispatch lines. This cooperative, story-driven game drops you into a series of scenarios where every choice pushes the story in a new direction. The 911 calls keep coming, witnesses clam up, and the local crime boss isn't making things easier: it's up to you and your partner to answer the calls before the city falls apart.

The heart of the game is the Beat Partners system: you pick two officers from an impressive roster, each with their own deck of cards, then shuffle them together to build your personal deck. Want to rush to radio calls, search the scene for clues, or back up your partner out on the street? There are hundreds of possible combinations, and each duo completely changes how you play.

But the real tension in Code 3 comes from the moral choices: play strictly by the book, or cut corners to save lives faster? Every step outside the code of conduct draws the attention of Internal Affairs, and drawing two "IA Heat" cards in the same turn sends you straight to a disciplinary interview, leaving your partner to handle the street without you.

Code 3 is for you if you love story-heavy cooperative games, branching campaigns where your choices actually matter, and that retro 80s buddy-cop vibe. Fans of deck management and moral dilemmas will also feel right at home, especially in the two-player configuration, which the community rates as the strongest way to play.

Born from a crowdfunding campaign, Code 3 has found its way onto nearly 230 BoardGameGeek shelves and holds an average rating of 7.65/10 among the players who have tried it. Its complexity sits around medium (about 3 out of 5), a solid middle ground between a hefty family game and an insider's favorite. The game also spawned several story-driven expansions, including The Corrupt Mayor and The Breaking Point, to keep the investigation going.

Code 3 was designed by Brandon Byler and Matt Ruggiero, with art by George Patsouras, Alexandre Robitaille and Tenda Spencer, giving the game its oversized, retro crime-comic look.
